Guided Tours of Rome: our shore excursion to Rome from Civitavecchia is already one of our top selling products. Enjoy Rome as an intimate group, rather than part of a large and informal group tour organized by your cruise line.
This tour is compatible with all major cruise line schedules and can be customized on request.
Our van and driver will be waiting for you as you disembark from your ship between 07:00 AM and 07:30 AM (if you are scheduled to disembark later, simply let us know in "Additional remarks" when you checkout so we can alert our driver). The driver will be holding up a sign bearing the name you provided us with at the time of booking. Upon leaving the port you will be transferred directly to ancient Rome, where you will collect your skip the line entry tickets and tour the following sites alone, either on foot or by car / driver where possible: Colosseum, Roman Forum, Capitoline Hill, Piazza Venezia, Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona, and the Pantheon. You will be able to wander across the Colosseum floor and imagine the bloody and violent games which took place there. From the Colosseum, you’ll walk up Via Sacra into the Roman Forum to explore the beautiful ruins which so many artists and scholars took their inspiration from.
Now is the time for a sandwich, drink, and bathroom stop before destination Vatican.
On arrival at the magnificent Vatican City, you will meet your guide for a private tour of the Vatican. Once inside, you will be shown all the major works of art on display in the Belvedere Courtyard, Room of the Muses, Round Room, Greek Cross Room, Gallery of Tapestries, Gallery of Maps, and Rooms of Raphael, before arriving at the Sistine Chapel. Before entering the chapel, you’ll learn about Michelangelo’s struggle to accept and then complete the work which was to become the single most recognized painting in the world. We then proceed to St. Peter’s Square and cover the history of the Vatican City State, before entering St. Peter’s Basilica. Therein we discuss Michelangelo’s beautiful Pieta’ and Dome, the Baldacchino and other works by Bernini, and the Transfiguration by Raphael. You’ll see the Crypt of St. Peter, the Holy Altar, and other monuments of great artistic import. We conclude on the portico to learn about Bernini’s colonnade, the red granite Egyptian obelisk (c. 4,000 years old), and the Swiss Guard.
This tour is organized using full day luxury air conditioned transportation and an English speaking driver. For the Vatican segment of the tour, we will also provide an English speaking tour guide to lead you through the museums and Sistine Chapel. Should you wish to have a guide at your disposition in the morning (ancient Rome) as well, send us an e-mail and we’ll arrange it for a small extra fee.
