The origins of the Jewish community in Ferrara are very ancient. Many Jews, driven out of their native countries (Spain, Southern Italy 1492, Portugal 1498 Germany 1530) were welcomed by the Este’s liberal policy and created here a community of 2, 000 Jews.

The ghetto was set up in 1627 by the papal government who ended the Este’s liberal policy. The tour starts from the castle where the Estes lived. In Piazza Cattedrale stands a statue whose base was made using old Jewish tombstones. Behind the Cathedral lies the old Jewish ghetto and its streets (Via Mazzini, Vittoria, Vignatagliata and Lampronti)where synagogues and schools were built. In the Palace of the synagogues 3 synagogues are still located together with a small Jewish museum. In Ferrara it is possible to visit the Jewish cemetery. Jewish synagogues and museum are TEMPORARILY closed for restorative measures

Castello estense inner courtyard, piazza Castello, piazza Savonarola, piazza Cattedrale, piazza Trento Trieste, via Mazzini, via dei Contrari, via vittoria, via Vignatagliata, vicolo Lampronti, via Ragno, via delle Volte, via San Romano. In order to reach the Jewish cemetery you have to walk some other streets. Jewish cemetery is about 1 Km far away from the city centre. It is possible to reach it on foot or a car or a taxi is needed
